$575.00
5 available

Dates: Thursdays: 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26

Time: 6-9 PM

Location: Bittersweet Studios, 1515 N Rosa Parks Way, Portland, OR 97217

Level: Beginner to intermediate. Students do not need to have taken a previous class at Bittersweet Studios, but should have some experience with wheel throwing (even just the basics of throwing & trimming- you do not need to think you’re “good” at it!).

This class is for returning or continuing beginner & intermediate students to get deeper in to the ceramics process and level up your skills in wheel throwing, hand-building, and decorating/glazing!

In this weekly three hour hands-on class, you'll learn and practice new techniques and ways to refine your process on the wheel and in hand-building. This class will cover topics from throwing multiples/sets, throwing and hand-building tall(er), refining details, underglaze techniques for greenware, and more. Students will have the opportunity to practice the techniques covered each week, but the course is not prescriptive and each student can work on their projects of choice, with the support of the instructors.

Students will have the opportunity to bisque and glaze work twice throughout the class, to see some finished results before glazing the final batch of work.

To make the most of your learning experience, we offer open studio hours during the first week from 5-8 PM Friday, 2-5PM Saturday, and 3-6PM Thursday. Starting in week 2, you’ll have independent access to the studio outside of class hours (a door code will be provided). We kindly ask students to limit their additional studio time to 6 hours per week. Students can fire up to 10 medium-size pots as part of their course, and can pay an additional $5 per pot for any additional pots they would like to fire.

Here’s a glimpse of the course schedule:

  • Week 1: Intros, throwing multiples

  • Week 2: Throwing tall(er): joining sections & hand-building tall with coils

  • Week 3: Trimming tips & refining hand-built forms

  • Week 4: Underglaze techniques for greenware

  • Week 5: Students’ choice topics [First batch bisque firing after class]

  • Week 6: Glazing techniques [First batch glaze firing after class]

  • Week 7: Time to complete all in-progress work [Second batch bisque firing after class]

  • Week 8: Glaze party to finish and celebrate your hard work. [Second batch glaze firing after class]
