Intro to Handbuilding Series - 4 weeks, Tuesdays, starting June 24th

$325.00
4 available

Dates: Tuesdays: 6/24, 7/1, 7/8, 7/15

Time: 6-9pm

Location: Bittersweet Studios, 1515 N Rosa Parks Way, Portland, OR 97217

This 4 week series covers the fundamentals of ceramics handbuilding techniques with project-based classes that allow students the freedom to explore.

This class is great for complete beginners and people with ceramics experience alike! Handbuilding techniques for working with clay open up endless possibilities in the world of ceramics. From figurines, to functional pots, to sculpture - there are few limits of what you can build with clay!

  • Week 1: Pinch pots & coil building
Learn how to make a pinch pot, and also build forms out of clay coils. In this class, students will make a pinch pot cup and saucer, and a pinch pot that they will add height to using coils.

  • Week 2: Slab building
Explore making forms from clay slabs. Students will have the opportunity to make a mug, bowl, tray, or wall vase.

  • Week 3: Putting it all together
Add to works in progress, or start a new piece that combines the techniques we’ve covered. Refine the details and surface of pieces before they are fired.

  • Week 4: Decorating & Glazing
Learn how to decorate and finish the surface of your pieces using underglaze and glazes.

Students can fire up to 5 medium size pots as part of their course, and can pay the member firing fees ($1.00 per lb per firing) for any additional pots they would like to fire.

Due to the sequential nature of this series, we cannot offer make-up classes. Please plan on attending every class session. For the duration of the class series, students have access to the studio during Open Studio Hours to work on their pieces.

Our Open Studio Hours are:

  • Thursdays 3-6 PM

  • Fridays 5-8 PM

  • Saturdays 2-5PM

Cancellation/refund policy: Refunds are available with 10 days’ notice before the first class date. You can choose between store credit for the full amount, or a refund to your card, minus a $30 processing fee per spot purchased. No refunds will be given for less than 10 days’ notice.
